Mhairi Black’s Maiden Speech - Twitter Reacts

15 Jul 2015

After two months of waiting and paper-waving, Mhairi Black was finally able to make her maiden House of Commons speech during yesterday’s Budget debate.

The 20 year-old is the youngest MP for centuries and has experienced a meteoric rise to fame since winning the seat of Paisley and Renfrewshire South from Labour’s Election Chief and Shadow Foreign Secretary Douglas Alexander in May.

The most notable moment of the first Common’s address came when Black attacked Chancellor George Osborne for his “earn or learn” attitude towards council housing for 18-21 year olds - a policy which would see Black unable to claim housing benefits due to her age.

She told the House, “We are now in the ridiculous situation whereby, because I am an MP, not only am I the youngest, but I am also the only 20-year-old in the whole of the UK who the Chancellor is prepared to help with housing.”

It had the Commons roaring, but Twitter is where the bulk of the responses took place.

Commentators young and old were united in awe at the speech…

All the praise impressed her boss, SNP Commons leader Angus Robertson…

Even popstar Ellie Goulding weighed in on the action…

High profile supporters of other parties offered their congratulations…

It is fair to say it was not your average Commons speech…

As ever, Jacob Rees-Mogg was able to sum up the day’s events down to a T.
